Alan Charles Kors (Editor)
5.0 out of 5 stars(2)

10 Used! | New! from $218.15 (as of 04/29/2014 10:54 PST)

Literature

Defining the Enlightenment as the "long eighteenth century," the Encyclopedia focuses on the entire range of philosophic and social changes engendered by the Enlightenment. It extends the conventional geographical boundaries of the Enlightenment, covering not only France, England, Scotland, the Low Countries, Italy, English-speaking North America, the German states, and Hapsburg Austria but also Iberian, Ibero-American, Jewish, Russian, and Eastern European cultures. Nor does the Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment limit itself to major centers like Paris in France and Edinburgh in Scotland, but shares the rich lode of recent scholarship on "secondary" and "provincial" centers such as Berlin and Geneva; Philadelphia and Milan.
The Encyclopedia of the Enlightenment brings a similar spirit of inclusion to the new theoretical and methodological approaches that have flowered in the humanities during the past two decades. Including feminist and various post-modernist reassessments alongside more traditional perspectives, the four volumes offer the broadest possible range of current knowledge.
Accessibility combined with scholarly rigor make the Encyclopedia the first choice for researching any aspect of the Enlightenment.

A Dictionary of Literary Symbols

A Dictionary
A Dictionary of Literary Symbols
Michael Ferber (Author)
4.2 out of 5 stars(4)

Download: $16.79 (as of 04/28/2014 11:20 PST)

Literature

This is the first dictionary of symbols to be based on literature, rather than 'universal' psychological archetypes or myths. It explains and illustrates the literary symbols that we all frequently encounter (such as swan, rose, moon, gold), and gives hundreds of cross-references and quotations. The dictionary concentrates on English literature, but its entries range widely from the Bible and classical authors to the twentieth century, taking in American and European literatures. For this new edition, Michael Ferber has included over twenty completely new entries (including bear, holly, sunflower and tower), and has added to many of the existing entries. Enlarged and enriched from the first edition, its informed style and rich references make this book an essential tool not only for literary and classical scholars, but for all students of literature.

Encyclopedia of Jewish Humor: From Biblical Times to the Modern Age

Encyclopedia of Jewish Humor: From Biblical Times to the Modern Age
Henry D. Spalding (Author)

Literature

Jewish humor mirrors the minds and hearts of the Jewish people. It reflects their joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments. Perhaps most significant, it demonstrates their willingness to poke fun at themselves, which has no doubt enabled Jews to endure centuries of hardship with head held high and a smile on their collective face. In the Encyclopedia of Jewish Humor, hailed as a landmark work when first published, Henry D. Spalding presents delightful anecdotes, quips, jokes, and yarns featuring the colorful folk who have added spice and spirit to Jewish life from biblical to modern times. Some of the selections are pungent, many are scornful of deceit and pretense, others are alive with brotherhood. Most are just downright hilarious. In thirty-nine chapters, Spalding allows forty centuries of Jewish life to speak through characters we have all grown to love. Here, you'll find the itinerant shnorrer who arrives in a small Lithuanian town late one Friday afternoon with no place to stay; the Yiddishe papa whose task it is to instruct little Mortie in the ways of the birds and bees; the congregant whose life's goal, it seems, is to make his rabbi miserable; the hypochondriac who complains of ailments as yet undiscovered. The author (re)introduces us to the shlemiels and shlimazls, rebbes and rebbetzins, mamas and papas, doctors and patients, marriage brokers and divorce lawyers, yeshiva students and sisterhood presidents whose peculiar antics never fail to entertain. In the preface to this classic work, Henry Spalding writes that the surest way to destroy humor is to analyze it. So no more analyzing...Now it's time to read a little something!

The Science of Discworld IV: Judgement Day

The Science of Discworld IV
The Science of Discworld IV: Judgement Day
Terry Pratchett (Author), Ian Stewart (Author), Jack Cohen (Author)
3.8 out of 5 stars(12)

27 Used! | New! from $9.02 (as of 04/26/2014 11:59 PST)

Literature

A brilliant new Discworld story from Terry Pratchett combined with cutting-edge science and philosophy from Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen. This time the trio take on THE REALLY BIG QUESTIONS -- God, the Universe and, frankly, Everything Else.
The fourth book in the Science of Discworld series, and this time around dealing with THE REALLY BIG QUESTIONS, Terry Pratchett's brilliant new Discworld story Judgement Day is annotated with very big footnotes (the interleaving chapters) by mathematician Ian Stewart and biologist Jack Cohen, to bring you a mind-mangling combination of fiction, cutting-edge science and philosophy.
Marjorie Daw is a librarian, and takes her job -- and indeed the truth of words -- very seriously. She doesn't know it, but her world and ours -- Roundworld -- is in big trouble. On Discworld, a colossal row is brewing.
The Wizards of Unseen University feel responsible for Roundworld (as one would for a pet gerbil). After all, they brought it into existence by bungling an experiment in Quantum ThaumoDynamics. But legal action is being brought against them by Omnians, who say that the Wizards' god-like actions make a mockery of their noble religion.
As the finest legal brains in Discworld (a zombie and a priest) gird their loins to do battle -- and when the Great Big Thing in the High Energy Magic Laboratory is switched on -- Marjorie Daw finds herself thrown across the multiverse and right in the middle of the whole explosive affair.
As God, the Universe and, frankly, Everything Else is investigated by the trio, you can expect world-bearing elephants, quantum gravity in the Escher-verse, evolutionary design, eternal inflation, dark matter, disbelief systems -- and an in-depth study of how to invent a better mousetrap.

Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies

Atheist Delusions
Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies
by David Bentley Hart (Author), Ralph Morocco (Narrator)
4.1 out of 5 stars(84)

New!: $24.95 $21.95 (as of 04/24/2014 12:37 PST)

Literature

In this provocative book one of the most brilliant scholars of religion today dismantles distorted religious "histories" offered up by Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and other contemporary critics of religion and advocates of atheism. David Bentley Hart provides a bold correction of the New Atheists¿s misrepresentations of the Christian past, countering their polemics with a brilliant account of Christianity and its message of human charity as the most revolutionary movement in all of Western history.

Hart outlines how Christianity transformed the ancient world in ways we may have forgotten: bringing liberation from fatalism, conferring great dignity on human beings, subverting the cruelest aspects of pagan society, and elevating charity above all virtues. He then argues that what we term the "Age of Reason" was in fact the beginning of the eclipse of reason¿s authority as a cultural value. Hart closes the book in the present, delineating the ominous consequences of the decline of Christendom in a culture that is built upon its moral and spiritual values.

Thomas Caryle's Edinburgh Encyclopedia Articles
Thomas Carlyle (Author), David A. Todd (Editor)

Download: $3.00 (as of 04/16/2014 22:26 PST)

Literature

Thomas Carlyle wrote 20 articles for the "Edinburgh Encyclopedia", and translated one other, from 1820-1823 as part of his "literary apprenticeship." Sixteen of these were gathered and republished in 1897, but never, we believe, have all twenty-one ever been published together. In this volume, Editor David A. Todd does just that. For those interested in Carlyle and his writings, this should be a convenient source for study of these early compositions, while Carlyle was just entering the world of literature and still trying to establish a style, cramped as it might be due to the constraints of an encyclopedia.

Literature

You’re spending the night with friends, and all of you stay up really late, laughing and talking about people you know. Eventually, however, the discussion takes a turn toward the darkness, and you end up telling ghost stories. These are tales of weird things, scary things that science tells us can’t possibly be real. Can they? Many people claim to have been in haunted places, or encountered things that they can’t explain. Even trusted family members, who would never lie to us, will often tell stories that make us question what we think we believe about life, and death, and realms that may lie in between. We can laugh off such things in the cold reasonable daylight; but after the sun goes down, and we’re alone in a quiet place with our thoughts… then it’s not quite so amusing.
This volume is a followup to the successful ‘Scary Stories,’ and presents 25 more weird, frightening, but supposedly TRUE tales submitted by the readers of the Weird Encyclopedia. Even better than the first volume, it presents stranger encounters, darker entities, and more memorable haunts.
Whatever you do, don’t read it in the dark, alone.
